📢 Important Update: New Law on Student Cell Phone Use Begins 2025-26 School Year 📵
Dear Verona Families,
Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, a new Missouri state law—Senate Bill 640—requires all school districts and charter schools to adopt a policy that limits the possession and use of electronic personal communication devices, such as cell phones and smartwatches, during the school day.
📝 What does this mean for students and families?
Starting next school year, students will not be permitted to use or display personal electronic devices from the time they arrive at school until the end of the school day. This includes:
📚 Instructional time
🍽️ Meal times
🛑 Breaks and transitions
📖 Study halls
⏰ Time between classes
✅ Exceptions will be made for students who have specific educational or health-related needs outlined in an IEP or 504 Plan, and for emergency situations or approved educational uses.
🔐 This law is designed to:
Support student learning and reduce distractions
Foster a safe and respectful environment for students and staff
Provide clear and fair guidelines across all Missouri schools
📌 Our district’s full policy will be available on our website prior to the start of the school year, and we will communicate expectations clearly to students and families.
🤝 We appreciate your support as we implement this new state requirement. Together, we will continue creating a focused, welcoming, and successful learning environment for all students.
